May 31 Team Meeting

Matt has created the Sami Poster. He'll run it by Cheryl when she comes back on Friday.

He has been working on the thank you wrap. He has the images but still hasn't received text.

Matt has created a new layout for the Strat Plan. Denny is out until 6/6. Matt hasn't heard yet if they still want to add the SWOT info.

The About Us page is finally working!

Christiana has been editing the UMD Alumns NEMBA media release. She write the orchard media release tomorrow assuming we do indeed win.

She has contacted June about the International Association of Great Lakes Research conference to see what kind of media release has gone out - had to leave a message. Christiana will also call Sharon at MN Sea Grant.

She has been blogging on Area Voices.

Abby has been doing research on the orchard competition to give Christiana some info for the media release.

Kathleen wrote 60 words for articles going up tomorrow on the homepage. She updated the story ideas doc after meeting with Christiana. She checked umdnews and currents. Updated Currents in Dreamweaver.

She called and emailed Amy Shuster about Rania article. Amy is out of the office until 6/21 so that article may not be ready to go up on the homepage on 6/7.

  1. Today we had angel food cake for Carrie's birthday--a very nice morning treat! It was lovely sharing a little time with the ladies on our floor.

The Duluth News Tribune jumped the gun and printed, in the "Eh" column, "UMD might win in the orchard contest" blurb in today's paper. I thought it was pretty lame but I had Abby researching for me yesterday so I was able to compile a fast and simple media release with solid statistics (thank you, Abby! Your work really really helped!). I sent it out around 10 a.m. today with a specific note to Jana at DNT that I knew about the "Eh" column but perhaps she would like more information. I also sent it to a number of other media sources. I hope someone picks up the story because it's amazing that we stayed in the top five the entire time!

I also compiled and sent out a media release about the NEMBA Awards--two winners are alumni according to Lori's excellent investigation skills. Kathleen suggested that I also find out the hometown of each alum and send the media release to the local papers (thank you for the idea, Kathleen!) which I shall do once I hear back from Lori. Charlene Brown at the UMD library was really happy that we were publicizing the event through a media release--she sent a nice thank you--it's always wonderful to have good feedback.

Yesterday I changed the Marketing Analytics information on the blog, the news release, the Homepage Story and Kathleen keenly realized that an edit or two had to happen with the 60-words as well. I love the strength of this team! I feel like nothing is missed with so many great minds behind our projects!!

I started Abby on another project--researching the Carl Sagan's Cosmos showings at Zinema2. Each show has UMD professors hosting. Should be a fun and quirky Homepage Story. I'm looking forward to hearing about what she finds.

Other than that, just updating Google Docs as we go along, posting on the UMD News blog, and trying to remember to write on this blog. Happy Day, PR and Marketing team!!

  2. Hard to say which was more exciting - homepage changes or angel food cake. Oh, who am I kidding. It was the cake. Yummy. But changed that homepage did. Also updated the index.

Updated Currents. I've been enjoying minding the Currents store. I always like making order out of chaos.

Showed Abby how to make changes in Dreamweaver. She received a couple of changes on her Green Guide article. That article is now ready to go for Tuesday.

Heard back from Amy Shuster so I was able to add some UMD pertinent info the Rania article. It will be ready to go next Tuesday or when ever we need it.

I sent an email out to the team that our meetings will have to be on Wednesdays now at 2:00 to accommodate everyone's schedules.

  3. Posted a blog entry about UMD winning in the apple orchard contest--so happy about that!! But, the DNT wasn't nearly as excited. Even with the great statistics that Abby drafted, the DNT article was small and in the "eh" column of today's paper. Not everyone is all that thrilled with trees but Abby did a fantastic job with the research component.

Met with Bill and we discussed news releases and the UMD News blog. I went over the statistics and even though they aren't in the hundreds, it is another venue to spotlight UMD--and it's free! We also talked about gardening and growing different types of ornamental grasses.

Kit sent me performance evaluation forms and I edited the duties and obligations as requested in her e-mail. I e-mailed Cheryl so that we could set up a time to meet and go over her evaluation of my work.

I met with Abby and we chatted about Carl Sagan's Cosmos event hosted by UMD professors, beginning June 4. We went over the research she had found and I walked her through the next few steps that we would take to cover the story. She is e-mailing Howard Mooers, Alec Habig, and a student who is also hosting the shows. I compiled and printed a list of 5 things to remember when writing a press release and we went over that together. I think it would be great for Abby to experience her first press release at UMD!! She said that they don't go over press releases in the journalism classes--which is too bad because even as a journalist, it's good to know what to look for when receiving releases.

  5. Spent the afternoon finishing up on the news release about UMD professors hosting Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" series at Zinema2...researched, wrote, edited, e-mailed, and finalized the news release all in one afternoon thanks to Abby's footwork. Sent it out to local media and Matt about two minutes ago. Finishing up the week with updating Google Docs and clearing off my desk. Have a great weekend, everyone, and welcome back Cheryl!

  6. I had a great time working on both the apple orchard and Carl Sagan research. It's a nice change of pace to do the lighter side of journalism where we're trying to make people look good and not getting all up in their business. We had a really positive response from everyone involved in the Zinema show and I think the finished product looks great.

Meeting with Christiana yesterday was both informative and a hoot. I'm a wee bit nervous/excited to do my first press release but I know with Christiana's guidance I'll do brilliantly. I am your padawan.

  7. Hi.

It is fun to be back. I have been keeping up with email but I had 25 messages to deal with and haven't done them all yet. Sigh.

I visited with Abby a bit. Hopefully I will get to work with her more soon. Awesome work so far.

Matt showed me his projects. We got funding for the Sami event so I did a basic info web page and sent it and the poster to the sponsors for approval.

I wrote the cutline for the new homepage photo. I met with fifth floor on the possible government shutdown.

I noticed some errors in the news release list page and Kristi looked it over too. Matt made the changes.

There was a news release on the regents meeting that the VCs wanted sent out today, so I did that.

We have our campus first presentation about PR and Marketing next Wed from 2:30 - 3:30 pm so we probably won't get to do a team meeting. What are your thoughts about the presentation? We should all plan on doing a part of it. A power point or "slide rocket" would be awesome!

    See you next week.

  8. I wrote the 60 words for tomorrow's two new homepage articles and cropped photos.

There were some scheduling changes so I updated the calendars that are posted on my door.

Contacted ITSS about getting Abby linked to the printer. They will be over tomorrow to (hopefully) make that happen.

Met with Cheryl about the Wed. presentation. I worked on the handout.

  9. Thanks to Abby for helping me do research for the trip to the Iron Range tomorrow. I had a conference call with Dr. Black and a meeting with Bill. I had a short meeting with Dr. Black about the strategic plan booklet.

Kathleen and I met about the presentation on Wed.

I will start with introducing myself, Christiana and Kathleen. When Matt arrives, we will introduce him.

Kathleen will go through the handout, with the pages viewed on the powerpoint. Christiana will talk about News Releases and the Area Voices.

I will use the Honoring the Earth event as an example, briefly showing all the ways the event is promoted.

I will briefly talk about stories that we highlight in News Releases, Area Voices and Homepage stories.

Finally, we answer questions. Our goal is to have fun and to help people.

It is good to have this powerpoint started so we can be ready to do another one in the fall.

I went to the Water Walker's event in Kirby lounge. I will walk with them on Thursday morning. I'll be in the office by noon.

    See everyone on Wed morning.

  10. NRRI sent me a list of 20 or so of their Experts List members. I am working on updating them on our list. It a bit more complicated to put them in once it's already up but I'm making some progress.

It's good to get more people on it! I was thinking it was a bit skimpy.

Brainstorming and designing the new strategic plan booklet format with Cheryl. We are going to be designing a booklet but it should be exciting , surprising, and different. Maybe a odd size... interesting paper? just a surprising layout?

Updated the Sami poster for Cheryl.

  11. I made a few corrections on the Sami article and wrote the media release. I emailed it to Cheryl and Christiana.

Sent homepage changes to Andy. I updated the index.

I updated the publicizing events web page and finished the handout. I spoke to Sandi in the Tweed. We can't have treats in the lecture gallery. I sent an email to C & C.

Checked currents email and updated Currents. Checked umdnews email and updated the story ideas doc.

Abby worked on the powerpoint and sent it to Cheryl.

I wrote my eval for tomorrow. I had phones while Sheila was in a meeting. I had Christiana phone today too since she was out ill.

  12. I was able to pull together screen shots for the presentation today. Hopefully I'll be able to see some of it before I have to dip out.

I'm also going to help with a skype interview for which I had to look up the difference in time zones for Finland. That's awesome as I've always wanted to visit..now I can via the magical world of skype!

  13. Spent the morning getting ready for the presentation. Also updated Currents and checked umdnews email.

The presentation went really well. I loved seeing so many people there. It was a great turn out. I hope we opened the lines of communication so that people feel very comfortable calling us and asking for help and assistance. I was very proud to be a part of such a great time.

  14. My message was just blinked away. AAARGH. Even after I set up a totally new account and after I tried a test message. Christiana, I feel your pain. Now I am writing this in an email so I have it even if the blog gets blinked away again.

Today was busy with the Dancer news release, the Vince story, and the KUMD secret story. Christiana and I reviewed the umdnews email and story ideas. It really does work.

Matt and I worked on the strategic plan a bit. It is looking so good.

Also, I played scrabble with Lori and Andy for 2 hours! Very fun.

I am going to concentrate on 1) writing a message for Dr. Black in the Strategic Plan booklet, 2) writing an op ed or "first person" with Dr. Black for the Chronicle for Higher Ed, 3) pitching the national science foundation visit to the Star Tribune.

Most of yesterday was consumed by our presentation and the exciting news about NSF. Thanks to all for the teamwork on the presentation. You did a great job.

I may be out of the office on Monday if I can get an appointment with Jena Ross at the STRIB. I'll keep you posted.

  15. Okay...here I go...and I appreciate that Cheryl feels the pain. Nothing worse than writing a clever, cutesy post and it disappears.

    Yesterday in a nutshell:
Brief compiled, edited, looked over by Cheryl, sent to Adam.
Vince Magnuson news release compiled, edited, looked over by Cheryl, sent to Media and Matt.
    Updated Google Docs
Sorted and filed every ridiculous piece of paper on my desk--got a handle on every e-mail printed for story ideas and upcoming news releases.
Researched and printed information about the Indian Dance event--passed it on to Cheryl who wrote the news release (thank you very much, Cheryl! I needed the help but didn't want to ask)
I know I did other stuff but I don't have my to-do list with me at home. On Monday I'll look it over...oh wait, I remember one thing...I wrote and sent out a thank you e-mail to everyone who came to our presentation. I bcc'd all of you so that if anyone replied, all of us could read the message. Nothing so far but a good thank you goes a long way in helping people feel comfortable when trying to decide if they should call us three weeks in advance for their event...hint hint...oh wait, I'm lecturing to the loyal...let's hope they heard our message during the presentation (:
Let's see...oh right, I'll check my list on Monday and update what I did yesterday. I did find some research for Abby with the Edible Landscape project coming up this summer. I wanted her to start thinking about it and coming up with good questions to ask, get the whole process rolling and I think it would be a great opportunity for her to write that first news release combined with a homepage story and then go a step further and post a blog entry. The whole nine yards baby! Man I love this job! Three cheers for a great team--I feel so lucky to work with all of you. Have a wonderful weekend and see you on Monday!

  16. Oh, and today...I sent the news release out to the media about the Indian Dance event with only two minor corrections from Nandini. I also sent it to Matt to post on our site. Peace, out.

  17. I talked with Betty this morning and I have revised our Publicity for UMD Events and News page.

Let me know if you think it needs tweaking.

  18. Yesterday and Today..

    Yesterday posted two news releases.

Added Alumni Associate to the News Links on all of our pages. Talked with Lisa a bit about youtube options. We should talk about what we want to do with it. I am going to meet with her this week on Wednesday. The rest of the time I spent updating the Experts List and met with Cheryl about changes to the Strategic PLan.

Today I updated the strategic plan and go it to the print shop before 3! It should be printed and ready to pick up on Monday. Posted some news stories and now I'm working on the Experts LIst again!

  19. Christiana and I reviewed story ideas first thing in the morning. I checked currents email and updated Currents. I checked umdnews email and updated the story ideas.

Began setting up changes for the homepage for tomorrow. Wrote 60 words for Sami article and cropped the picture. Set up a homepage article on the Indian dance event. Wrote the 60 words for that and cropped the photo. Also wrote the 60 words for the article on Vince and cropped the photo for that. Also had to photoshop the background a bit as it was too "portrait" and, of course, I need it more "landscape" for the homepage article.

  20. Ah, Monday.

    The List...

Posted on the area voices blog (Duluth-Rania Friendship) and checked the stats from over the weekend

    E-mails:
Nandini (Indian Dance event)--she's very grateful for the news release and publicity from our team. I gave her some advice on photographs to use and how to contact local media for her event
June Kallestad (NRRI deer repellent)--I checked to see if the product is available for purchase at local stores. It is! Gordy's and a landscaping business that I can't remember the name of right at the moment
Allison Aune (July 1 kid's art event)--I double checked to find out if it's okay for us to publicize the event in the Homepage Story and on the blog

Typed "Letter to the Editor" for Bill Wade in reference to the Duluth News Tribune correction--faxed it to Robin Washington

Updated Google Docs--briefly met with Kathleen to make sure we were on the same page for the week based on the Story Ideas

Chatted with Abby in regard to the Edible Landscape projects this summer. She scheduled an interview (already!! Good job, Abby!) to chat about the program and to start the research

I am currently looking into the Wikipedia listing for UMD as per Cheryl. It appears that we need more substantial references throughout the entry, not just links to website pages. That's all I can figure out at the moment. I have a feeling that I might spend most of my day tomorrow working on correcting our presence on Wikipedia. If anyone knows anything about the site, please feel free and chime in.

  21. I've emailed as many people as I could about their gardens and have heard back from a nice amount. Looks as if I'll be meeting with at least two people so far early next week to chat with them about their gardens. I'm also going to see if I can maybe snatch the other student helper, Rachel, to help me take some before pictures.

  22. Christiana proofed the 60 words for me. I then sent the homepages to Andy. Updated the index.

I checked currents email and added a couple of things last minute. Cheryl proofed Currents. I sent out the email. I had trouble with the formatting in the email when I tested it. I actually had to put the info in a word document then copy it into the email. Then the font and font sizes looked great.

Added the Sami art workshop for children to the events calendar. Also updated the team calendar.

Went through news articles that Sheila had given me. I didn't see anything that we should cover. A lot of good coverage from news releases Christiana had sent out. That's great to see.

Brainstormed with Christiana about the Wikipedia page. I think we can make it look and read a lot better. I'm happy to help.

  23. Hello Wikipedia. Spent a lot of time editing, reading, and thinking about the UMD wikipedia page. A big thank you to Matt, Kathleen and Cheryl for help throughout the day. I think it's a great project to take on. It does represent UMD and it should be polished and better organized.

Posted a blog entry, Arctic Storytelling, and found a couple images that I loved and added them to the post. Panoramic of Norway and a pretty crest of Tromost. I wish I had a princess crest. Hmm...

    Edited Google Docs.

Pretty quiet with only one news release scheduled for this week. Perfect timing for the wikipedia overhaul.

  24. Lots of cutting and taping.

Cut and taped Strategic plan copies for Denny, Bill and Cheryl.

Updated the Thank you Wrap for Carrie... sent this back for approval. 2nd draft.

    Researched Wikipedia editing a bit.

Added Alumni Association to the blog!
