June 15

Christiana went over the Wikipedia changes we need to make. Matt will do some research to see how we can make our changes last.

Susan Mack attended the meeting. She will identify a donor for the Bridge and run it by Tricia. Kathleen will make copies of SCSE donors that have been profiled over the last few years. Susan thought someone from the Engineering Scholarship Committee or possibly ROTC might be good.

Matt is adding NRRI experts that he recently received. He is waiting for approval/changes on the Foundation piece from the Chancellor's office. Matt needs to talk to Andy about changing the photo on the events calendar page. Cheryl will send him some info as well. Regarding YouTube, Lisa doesn't want it but we can't take it. It would have to come from Linda Deneen. Matt will show Cheryl designs for the Night/Day ad.

Cheryl, Christiana, and Kathleen had met earlier and went over story ideas. Kathleen will follow up on the Bridge with development directors. We reviewed homepage stories coming up.

Abby wasn't able to make the 2:00 pm meeting. She is doing some source research for the Wikipedia site. We want to make sure that we have all the books about UMD that are out there. She will do a homepage article on Market Day. She is also going to make copies of donors articles for Bob in CEHSP so he can be familiar with what's been done in the past.

  1. I fixed the spelling error that Christiana found on the UMD Blog.... Calendar.

Talked to Lisa about the Youtube Channel. We can use this whenever we want to. If we want to imbed video into news stories I can do that if anyone wants to. I will make a new section called news on her YouTube.

Fixed our phone numbers that were mixed up on our websites.

Updated the Strategic Plan - photos and some text changes. I will work on the design of the changes a bit more I think. Some of them need some ironing!

That's it! Not in tomorrow... If you need anything call though! I should be out and about.

  2. Today...

Compiled a news release about Tom Hedin (Art and Design professor emeritus) who published in the Art Bulletin. E-mailed the rough draft to him, haven't heard back yet.

Waiting for more information about the Personal Finance Challenge. I have zero information about who, what, where, and all that jazz...just that our students won first place. I would love to have this done by today but without the facts...

E-mailed the NEMBA Award news release to Sturgeon Bay, WI media because the honorable mention winner, Rudy Senarighi, is from there and he approved my sending the release.

Met with Abby and gave her a list of research projects:
Hoagie Scholarship, Taste of the Lake, and the Bridges Program. I have the research she found for the Bridges Program--I am integrating that material into a Homepage Story. Taste of the Lake is a Sea Grant recipe contest coming up in August. Cheryl thought a Homepage Story and Area Voices blog would be worth taking on--we agree! Abby is looking into it and confirmed that this is the first recipe contest. She will have a brief biography about the Sea Grant ready on Monday, I will have started the Homepage Story and have it ready for posting on Tuesday, in place of the Market Day story.

Worked with Cheryl and Abby on the Chronicle of Higher Education letter, focusing on diversity and integrating multiculturalism on campus.

Posted a blog about the Maritime Research Academy--the T/S State of Michigan is in port--found a really great image of the ship and I think the post is quite attractive. The only thing missing is a princess at starboard.

Abby is researching for our Wikipedia Overhaul. She will find references for portions of the history section and the campus statistics.

For the rest of the day, I am writing about the Bridges Program and the IESES program. I will post an entry about the Alumni Association hospitality tent at Grandma's Marathon before I leave this afternoon.

Tonight, I am baking blueberry pie. Foggy day or not, it's time for summer dessert.

  3. Did some research on changing the photo on the calendar. We change change it whenever we want to now. We can also make it shuffle through a few different photos.

Worked on the design of the Strategic Plan. Revised the Strategic Plan and printed two copies... cut and taped them together for Denny. I dropped them off in his mailbox today.

Worked on the layout for Night and Day. Dropping the background but making it interesting. Will show Kathleen and Christiana next week.

Updated the Experts List with all the new NRRI people!

Added the poster to the Sami Women Homepage Story. Edited the Homepage stories page so that the dates didn't wrap down.

I will talk to Kathleen and Christiana about photos for the Calendar page next week and work on Wikipedia... and converting the Strategic Plan to CMYK!

  4. THIRD BLOG TRY. But I am determined!
Am off to Nashville soon, Lucy sent this for us to review.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Nikthestoned
Lucy also reviewed the article Christiana and I wrote for Dr. Black on diversity. she had some more resources so I will work on revising that. I may take a whack at it while I am gone. I contacted John Hatcher to see if he could review it.
Good meeting with Dr. Black about the logo issues. Whew!
I cleaned off my desk and am almost done dealing with the 150 emails that reside in EMAIL HELL. I need to block off designated times for clean up!
I contacted Timo in Helsinki about a skype interview June 28, 29, or 30.
The NSF is coming July 5, 6, and 7 or July 6, 7, and 8. They are going out on the Blue Heron on July 7. I emailed all of the scientists and Jenna Ross from the Strib. I'd like the Strib to get the exclusive and other media can know as soon as that trip is over. We could even do a release on july 7 after the ship leaves port. I'd like your input on that. Thanks for everything. You are awesome!

  5. Unfortunately I was unable to go to market day as it had been canceled. This was alright though as I wouldn't have had much time anyways since I needed to get to my other job. Instead of that story, I worked with Cheryl on a homepage story about a recipe contest for Sea Grant. I also helped compare the online version of the strategy plan with the physical copy to make there weren't any discrepancies. There were not!

I just interviewed Roxanne Richards about the bike garden outside of Darland. I was going to take pictures too but once again the weather has thwarted me so I will wait until it is a bit nicer out to snap some pics. Someday the fickle Duluth weather shall cooperate with my plans.

  6. Met with Kathleen and discussed the Story Ideas coming up this week--we switched a few things around to accommodate for Taste the Lake, Summer Solstice at the Planetarium, and a few other items. No big deal to make the moves. It's nice having so much flexibility--we don't get that during the school year.

Posted twice on the Area Voices blog...the Repellex NRRI deer repellant and the Planetarium Summer Solstice celebration. Within an hour of the deer repellant post, 20 visitors. Ah yeeeah. It probably helped that I titled the entry "Protect Your Plants." It was an intentional marketing angle, Don Draper style.

Researched and started the Homepage Story for the Integrated El. Ed and Special Ed program at UMD.

Received corrections from Tom Hedin, as well as a photo and hard copy of the Art Bulletin article. I didn't realize how magnificent it was until I held it in my hands. It's quite the article. Kathleen and I are going to attempt to scan Hedin's photo so that I can send it to media with the news release.

Jana Hollingsworth asked to speak to someone about the Budget and she asked if Greg Fox would be the best option. I called Tricia Bunten and she agreed that Jana should speak with Greg.

Nandini asked if I would contact the media again about the upcoming Indian Dance event this Thursday. I'll see what I can do but I told her that sometimes the media just shows up, even if they don't confirm with the event organizer.

Anyway, a lot of little things that take time. I like to think that my job is about fanning the flames and putting out wildfires. Boo-yah.

  7. Oh, and I deleted 757 spam "comments" from the Area Voices blog account. Not a single real comment but at least it's up to date.

  8. Reviewed story ideas with Christiana. Updated the doc.

Wrote the Psychedelic Poster article. Put it on a Dreamweaver page and added photos. Christiana reviewed it. I then sent it to Sandi Peterson at the Tweed for her O.K.

Started working on homepage changes for tomorrow. Wrote 60 words for fish recipe article, cropped photos.

Christiana invited me to sit in on interview with Greg Fox and NBC news affiliate. Went well.

  9. Edited the Sami stories.

Added the posters to the Sami News Stories. (was missing the NEWS section one)

Fixed the bleeds on the Sami Poster and sent it back to the print shop. They are printing it now. It should be done.

Started laying out the design for the Technology Requirements Page.

Looked over the Strategic Plan and will make a few changes to minor design details tomorrow! It looks awesome!

  10. The longest day of the year. Good thing, as there was lots to do.

Christiana reviewed the 60 words. I then sent changes to Andy and updated the index.

Made changes that Vicki had requested to the Kirk Kersten article.

Started the next issue of Currents. Checked umdnews and updated the story docs. Also updated the mktg/comm website.

Wrote a draft for Cheryl of a letter from the Chancellor for The Center Magazine. I emailed it to Cheryl.

    Proofed Christiana's Special Ed article.

  11. Dug through emails for a while.

Printed Night and Day layout for Kathleen and Christiana to look at tomorrow.

Finished up the Technology recommendation page for Beth and sent it to her. I will put it online tomorrow afternoon.

Put the Rock Poster picture on the Events Calendar and messed around with the options to come up with something that looks good.

Sent some ideas to Alumni for an identifier.
