April 19

We had our meeting - sans Cheryl.

Mandee has the Issac Odim article done and asked if Cheryl would review it. She interviewed Sarah Pollema last Saturday and will write that up. She has the LSBE award article yet to work on.

Zach said that the Sam Helland article is still a go. Zach has sent an email to Jim Eischen but hasn't received a reply yet.

Christiana is just finishing up the Odyssey article. Kathleen will call Sherise for the names of the students in the picture. Matt will take pictures of a book cover.

Kathleen edited Currents today and Zach made changes. She is working on homepage changes today.

  1. A combination of yesterday and today--wrote the Dance Team, Bill Payne, ACI Awards, and Planetarium media releases/blog/homepage story.

Planetarium Homepage Story will be ready to go tomorrow (Wed)--thanks to a great team effort (thank you Kathleen and Matt!)

Sent Dance Team and Bill Payne media releases to local media outlets.

    Updated Google Docs Story Ideas

Worked on the BRIEF--will be completed tomorrow (Wed)

Attended the Higher Education meeting in the Library Rotunda with Cheryl. Everyone was on the same page and it will be fantastic if everyone sends letters and makes phone calls on behalf of education.

Matt walked Kathleen and I through a photoshop tutorial. Matt also took photos of the library book covers for the Odyssey and turned the emblem into a perfect image for the Homepage Story.

And, most importantly, I handed out dark chocolates to my team (couldn't find Zach and Mandee so I stowed a couple away to give to them tomorrow and *gasp* Matt does not like chocolate, tsk tsk).

All in all, a great Monday and Tuesday. Three cheers for PR and Marketing!

  2. New press releases walked in the door... Judy Trolander's book and the Business Person of the Year Labo Award for tomorrow (Wed).

Spent a lot of the day at the legislative briefing. Met with Bill about the new identity and marketing plan for next fall. He suggests we meet with Dr. Black next week about it.

Have a Star Tribune interview set up with Dr. Black for Wed am, then the Labo Award banquet, then Almanac North taping. WHEW!

I'm sorry I missed the meeting... Should I just print out the Story Ideas document? I'd like to have a set day (days?) that I print it every week.

Mandee and Zach have been awarded extra hours. I hope to work on the Commencement stories on the next two Fridays. Mandee, we need your hours through May 13.

I want to publicize our team but we really need the umdnews email address before we do it. Maybe wait till Fri Ap 29?

    Thanks to all.

  3. One more new news release that needs a mention... MN Indigenous Language Symposium...

  4. Ran out of time to blog yesterday.

Edited Currents with Zach. I went through the story ideas on google docs to make sure we weren't missing anything. We were - the Honors energy forum. I asked Zach to add that (which he did, thanks). Also per Cheryl added info about the Labovitz awards. We also had a couple of last minute faculty additions. Proofed Currents after Zach made changes, verified links and sent out the Currents email.

Helped Christiana put her Odyssey article up on Dreamweaver and format photos. I wrote the 60 words for that article and cropped the homepage pic.

Bill Payne approved the quotes in the SFA/NYT class article.

Fatima sent the text for the e-book artice.

  5. Today I reworked the Isaac Odim article. Kathleen looked at it and I implemented her suggestions. Cheryl needs to look at it yet before I send it off to him for changes.

I emailed Pat Borchert about the LSBE LaBounty awards. I have an interview set up with her tomorrow (Thursday) at noon. The awards ceremony is on April 26 though.

I made a new Currents for the last issue (my last one EVER) and started adding things to it.

  7. Today I wrote something up for Christiana about the Random People Project in some journalism courses. Still nothing from Jim, I think he may be busy or something. I also got more information about Sam Helland from Mandee, turns out that there was an article I hadn't found that she had.

  9. Sent homepage changes to Andy and updated the Home Page News index.

I put Fatima's article up on Dreamweaver. I edited it and added pictures. I sent the link to Fatima and Cheryl.

I proofed a couple of media releases that Christiana was working on. I also proofed the article Mandee wrote on Issac Odim.

I am interviewing Linh Scally, the CEHSP grad student, at the Tweed tomorrow.

  10. Finished the Odyssey Homepage Story--once it appeared on the web, I posted a summary on the UMD News Blog and included a link to the HP Story.

Finished the ACI Awards news release--waiting to hear from Cheryl if any edits are necessary before I send out to local media.

Made corrections to the BRIEF and sent the Energy Action Plan summary to Mindy Granley. She approved the wording. The BRIEF is ready--I will send to Adam tomorrow when the possibility of changes/additions is far less likely.

Researched and wrote the Indigenous Language Symposium news release. What a terrific event!

Formatted and edited the Amatuzio news release--waiting for a photo from Brett or Cheryl.

Zach asked for something to do so I asked if he would mind writing a short summary about the Random Person Project led by the writing studies department and journalism students. He did a fabulous job (while disliking chocolate but no one's perfect). I sent an e-mail to Cheryl for approval and she suggested that I contact AAF decision-makers to make sure toes weren't being squished/boundaries crossed, etc. Sent an e-mail to Denise Archer and Kelly for approval.

Returned Odyssey and Illiad books to the library before their July due date.

Grabbed a couple pamphlets from tables at the Sustainability Fair that discussed the Sea Grant--thought it might help explain the presence of the grant on campus. Filed them away for possible future use but I didn't read anything that helped solve the mystery. Kathleen originally posed the question about the Sea and Land Grant and now I can't stop thinking about it.

And lastly, I'm ready for spring, people!

  11. Interviewed Pat Borchert today and will have that written up before May 11. She goes out of the country to Ireland after that. The awards ceremony is on Tuesday at 4:30 so I will go to that and get student quotes from there.

Sarah Pollema article is pushed to the back burner so I can get the other ones done first.

Isaac Odim was sent the link to the story for changes.

Also, Cheryl asked me to post my hours for the rest of the semester because I'm increasing them slightly. I'm going to work on Wednesdays until 3 or 4 pm and then during finals week I will have around 20-25 hours total to work. I will probably also do some more work from home as well so that would factor in too.

  12. ACI Awards news release sent to media

Waiting for a photo of Amatuzio but I did send out the news release

E-mailed entire dance team with a congratulatory message with link to the UMD News Blog and copied an e-mail to them that I received from DNT sports editor Rick Lubbers (he would like to write an article in the sports page about the Dance Team and I thought the ladies on the team would like to know that DNT was interested in their story)

Kelley from MN Power gave an enthusiastic go-ahead for the Random Person Project media release. I then sent an e-mail to John Hatcher asking for more information. He directed me to the Lake Voices website where a few of the stories are listed. I read several of them (I admit, they made me teary-eyed...especially the one about a family building a playground for disabled kids...seriously, the Random Person Project is amazing). On Monday I plan to write a thorough news release.

Sent Indigenous Language Symposium news release to the great wide world--and many of the e-mail addresses were returned as invalid from the Communicators Council list. I'm pretty sure it's something that I did wrong but maybe we should visit the site as a group and compare media lists to see if the addresses are up to date?

Sent out BRIEF to Adam in the cities. Always nice to check that off the weekly list.

Researched and compiled the Honors Program Energy Forum. Sent it to Cheryl and I will e-mail it out tomorrow as soon as it's approved.

Put together the fastest media release in the universe with Cheryl for the Civil Engineering Demonstration next Tuesday...there was smoke billowing from my fingertips, that's how fast we were with putting it together. Yeah. Pretty sweet.

Interviewed Brenna Oelfke for the senior commencement profile--she's looking for an internship in publishing or editing or writing. Anyone know of anything?

I worked with Zach on writing a media release about Judith Trolander's book--he did a fantastic job for his first media release. I'll probably send it out on Monday, but it was great checking it off my list. Thanks for your help, Zach!!

And now I shall clean off my desk and welcome the weekend with a slight twinge of sadness because I'll miss this amazing team between now and Monday. Have a great weekend, fellow PR and Marketing-marketers!

  13. Hello, today I wrote something up for Sam Helland, froke out over my lack of reply from Jim Eishen, Wrote something on the book "From Sun Cities to the Villiages" (a press release), did things for Sheila, delivered a shirt to chancellor Black, and checked the Currents email... nadda.

  14. Sent out news release for Honors Program Global Forum...also e-mailed it to Matt because we now have the capability to work on that site sans Andy. Hopefully we can turn the news site into something attractive--like the Currents page!!

  15. Pitched the Isaac Odim story to MPR and I think they want it. Sent the story and photos. The editor, Bill Catlin said he wants Cathy Wurzer to do it. Oh yeah!

Matt is doing amazing stuff on that big screen. Fun to see it all come together.

umdnews is close. It isn't available in google mail yet but I logged into it via horde.
    So far nothing shows up.
    login umdnews
    password 1Du1uth1

The search team asked me to send a press release on the new Vice Chancellor. I sent it to the Duluth area. Matt posted it.

Am helping Jacob Kittlestad from Fox find UMD people to interview about driving less to save gas. Lined up John Pastor and someone from the sustainability office for Mon.

I revised the Story Idea page to list past history. It is still a little funky. Need input. Love how impressive it looks with the history of what we have already accomplished.

Thanks to all. Great week! Two more weeks of craziness coming, then relax!

  16. Thursday I met with Linh Scally and interviewed her.

Today I confirmed which articles will go live tomorrow. I then cropped the photos and wrote the 60 words for each one. I asked Christiana to review the 60 words just to make sure they are O.K.

Christiana and I met and reviewed the story ideas to confirm what's old, new, etc. I proofed a memo for Cheryl. Learned from Matt how to update the home page news items index page.

  17. I spent way too much time working on the UMD News Blog but I LOVE the direction it is going--more refined, user-friendly, and today's blog photo is just plain gorgeous (thank you Matt and Kathleen).

Met with Kathleen and ironed out the Story Ideas on Google Docs. We agreed that adding an Area Voices history would help for future reference. I then updated Google Docs and printed off a copy for filing.

E-mailed several people for upcoming media releases/blogs/BRIEF's...

Adam in the cities with a link for the Energy Forum.

Pat Dennis for information in regard to Jim Eischen at Nationals.

Jana about the Language Symposium--she will push for it to appear in the Eh column but she covered past years already.

Contacted folks about the Civil War Reenactment and assured them that the topic is very interesting but we're very busy at this time of year. Promised them a spot on the UMD News Blog tomorrow morning (Tues).

Kelley at MN Power--I will be attending the May 11 Luncheon with a video camera to record the presentation.

Then I organized all of the materials for this week's writing projects and expect to have a good day writing tomorrow.

Enjoy the gorgeous weather, PR and Marketing team, and have a great evening!
