Kat worked on the annual report on Monday. She also worked on the AIA article. Cheryl will email puppet pictures.
Jess blogged on Monday. She has been working on Heikal. She wrote the first draft on the Mysteries project, and she wrote the first draft on the Jean Baptiste article. She hung snow advisory posters. She found the map really confusing and will try to create a new one when/if time allows. She also compiled a list of local American Indian radio stations. She and Christiana are waiting for changes on Civil Engineering article.
Zach's eye tracker article is done. He receive corrections, made those and the correction were approved. He worked on the Annual Report with Cheryl. The Statesman would be willing to run his article on Mike. Zach has heard from Mike yet however.
Kathleen has been working on the annual report, proofing, editing, etc. Currents went out yesterday. She is working on the next issue of Currents and putting together a list of events for the Dec/Jan Night/Day ad. Homepage changes were made yesterday. She has all the UMD Facts back and can proceed with making changes. She will talk to Duane in LSBE about UROPs. He was out this week.
We reviewed what photographs need to be taken for the Bridge. Cheryl will contact Brett.
Jess suggested that we obtain a list of advisors for student organization so we can email them information about how student organizations can publicize their events. Jess also said that we need a new camera in our department.
This morning Cheryl and I worked on Heikal right away since we decided to take a more understandable method to understanding the UROP. I also wrote out a first draft of the Greek Mysteries UROP as well. I have to contact them and Brett to see if they are available to do photos. I have a start of my Jean-Baptiste Quillien UROP piece as well and have already contacted him and his advisor about doing photos.
ReplyDeleteThis morning I put up snow advisory posters for Christiana. This afternoon I did a bit of research to look up American Indian radio stations in the local area for Cheryl.
The pizza was delicious and I highly recommend the Green Tea Canada Dry! Great job everyone!
Still waiting to hear from Mike Montano. I hammered out a (very) rough draft of the iPad Application story, and helped Kathleen proofread the UMD Facts page, as well as emailed the students involved with the holiday tree about setting up an interview for the near future.
ReplyDeleteI also found out about something crazy while on the computer last night; everyone should look into the new "SOPA" law that is in the process of being passed right now... scary stuff.
I proofed the annual report. I found one correction that was needed and left that for Cheryl. I proofed a document from Christiana for the Ianni news conference. Updated the story ideas doc. Updated Currents and finished the Night/Day info that Cheryl needs for the ad. I sent that to her.
ReplyDeleteI updated the UMD Facts for 2011 and sent the link to Andy.
I did an audit of toner in the office and sent an email to Betty on what should probably be ordered. I also sent an email regarding the possible computer upgrade on Monday.
Forgot to blog yesterday, sorry; I will blog before I dive into anything major to recap. Yesterday Kat and I met with Travis for the holiday tree story, and got a lot of good information. I'll start writing the story today (hopefully getting a good chunk of it done).
ReplyDeleteThe Holiday Tree story is coming along well, however I had to stop. The story will be run long after next week (which is when the event takes place), so I can't write anything about the event itself, as it will be obsolete unless it's about how it already happened... I have to wait a week to write much more on it. I also did more to the iPad story, which is well on its way to being done by the assigned date.
ReplyDeleteOn Sunday I wrote my UROP article. I polished it on Monday and sent the link to the student. Christiana and I went over the story ideas doc. I made updates. Worked a little bit on Currents. I spent the afternoon with the tech guys who updated my computer with Active Directory.
ReplyDeleteToday I attended Christiana's Ianni Hall press conference in the morning. It went really well. I worked on homepage changes. I edited a couple of articles, wrote 25 words and cropped photos. I sent the changes to Andy. Then Cheryl needed a different article to run so I redid the homepage changes and sent those to Andy. I updated the homepage news index. Worked on Currents.
We don't have a blog to comment on from the week of Thanksgiving so here is a catch up on my activities from the last week:
ReplyDeleteI spoke with Brett about coordinating a photoshoot with Jean-Baptiste for his UROP, sent out an e-mail but have received no response yet from either him or his faculty sponsor.
Cheryl sent out an e-mail for edits from Dr. Heikal and Jillian about their UROP but also no response.
Greek Mysteries has been edited and revised and the final copy sent to Cheryl for approval.
Today I sent out e-mails to the Civil Engineering Master's students with the article for them to look over, edit quotes and fill in some technical holes. I also called, left a message and sent an e-mail to the Dean of CE to get a quote from her perspective on the new program.
Now I just have to wait for responses before submitting a final draft on each project. In the mean time I will edit photos from the CE interview.
Hello, realized that I forgot to blog after I went to bed, so I got up and fixed it. I put up the holiday tree story as "tree" on the website, got a start on adding phone #s to the UROP list, and made Kathleen's corrections to Maureen Tobin Stanley's story on the homepage.
ReplyDeleteSee everyone at 10
I wrapped up the holiday tree story (pun intended), helped Betty move some things upstairs to the new office, found a bit of background information on violent media research for my interview with Jessica Pospeck next Thursday (this was the date that worked best. It's a bit past my deadline, but this was it will happen fresh after a meeting between her and her adviser, so there will be more information around. I also began polishing the iPad story and finding the full names of the people involved in the panel.
ReplyDeleteToday I wrote rough drafts for 3 news releases: UMD Holiday Tree, Andrea Schokker's new appointment as Executive VC for Academic Affairs, and NSF Science Nation Chippewa video. I sent all 3 to Sue to review and edit.
ReplyDeleteMet with Penny Cragun and several AFA folks about incorporating good PR about people with disabilities. Kathleen and I plan to share the information with the group during a team meeting--it was very thought provoking and well worth the time to meet with Penny.
Tomorrow I will spend time writing news releases about the Diversity Award and the math professor who is featured in the magazine, Liberal Education. I will also work on the Brief.
Since I will be gone for our Wednesday meeting, I am going to do a pre-meeting blog.
ReplyDeleteSOCIAL MEDIA AD AGENCY
I'm going to a meeting in the Twin Cities tomorrow about universities and strategies for using social media effectively. I'll bring back a report.
ANNUAL REPORT
After a gahzillion emails, phone calls, changes, new files, photo shopping the purple glare off a face, etc. the Annual Report is on press and will be mailed this week! Thanks to all for your help.
CHICAGO TRIP
The alumni trip to Chicago is gaining steam. I have two confirmed interviews and two more to firm up. Those will be Bridge stories.
UROP
This is very strong. We have six stories posted. I worked on Heikal and Mysteries with Jessica; and gave a bit of input on others. Whew. I've got an interview time set up with Bedassa for Friday at 11:15 am. Jess, Zach or Kat, if any of you would like to join me, that would be great. These UROP stories could all be good for the Twin Cities Homepage as well.
TV-SPOTS
Swim Creative is making six 15-sec TV spots for us: SCSE - Blue Heron, SFA - violinist and /or saxophone in Weber, CEHSP- students working with autistic child, CLA - wind energy project, LSBE - students visit Cirrus design, Athletics - woman athlete working out in athletes gym. This website has the first cut of the Blue Heron

NEW YEAR'S CARD
After looking at a lot of other (kind of expensive) options, Sue asked Swim if they could film the musician in the Weber for both the TV spot and for the New Year's Greeting. They agreed! Brett will do photos with them tomorrow at 11 am for the printed version. Matt can work on the printed card.
NEWS RELEASES
I met with Jenna Ross from the Strib last Tuesday. She is lovely and she did a riveting interview. Fascinating to see her at work! I did a news release on the WWII vet who escaped the Nazis (Mon, Nov. 5, 3pm, Mon 80) and then went back with the U.S. military. I looked up info on the UMD diversity award from the Twin Cities for Christiana.
HOMEPAGE STORIES
I worked on Milan Kovacovic (milan), and the Chicago Play (biograph) stories last week. KAT! Let's do the Sweden story soon! I don't know when (or if) the Star Tribune will print the Peace Scholarship Story. Let's take the date off the list until we know.
WEB PAGE UPDATES
Now that the deluge of the Annual Report is over, Matt and I talked about some web page clean-up.
1) The Calendar of Events "How To" section is now outdated. The Twin Cities made minor changes (without telling us) and it needs changing. It is also really badly done (I did it myself) and could use a facelift.
2) On January 1, we need to switch all our webpages to a secure FTP site. We also should replace "unirel" and possibly "currents" with
our new directory and url (http://www.d.umn.edu/external-affairs/) That way the new pages for the homepagestories and other pages will have a new home.
